Sal Rosenkranz, an 89 year-old Holocaust survivor, spoke at the Queens College Hillel Monday afternoon. Mr. Rosenkranz told students about his experience in the holocaust, starting from the initial Nazi invasion of his hometown of Krosniewice, Poland. Rosenkranz spoke about living in concentration camps, including the six weeks he spent at the infamous Buchenwald. He explained that he faced a number of situations in which he felt his death was inevitable, but that somehow he had survived, though much of his family was killed in Treblinka.
The speech was accompanied by the presentation of a miniature museum, modeled after the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. The mini-museum was built by members of the Queens College Hillel.
About forty people attended the event, which was followed by a free lunch, sponsored by the Hillel.

QC Hillel Goes to US Holocaust Memorial Museum
Published by Aaron Cohen March 19th, 2007 in Queens College. 0 CommentsMore than 100 students departed New York Saturday night to head to Greenbelt, Maryland, for a trip to the United States Holocaust Museum on Sunday.
The Queens College Hillel planned this year’s “Hillels of New York Trip to The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.” The trip, sponsored by the David and Linda Taub Family, has been sending Jewish and African-American students to the Holocaust museum in Washington DC annually for over a decade.
The program is designed to unite Jewish and African-American students through the mutual historical experience of persecution and suffereing, said trip organizer Itiel Katz. “It’s also to inform people,” Katz said, noting that ” it’s interesting to take a group with no connection at all [to the Holocaust, when] we assume its crucial to other people.”
Students from various campuses within the New York Metropolitan Area participated in the trip. On Sunday morning the group went on a short tour of the capital building before going to the Holocaust Museum for a self-guided tour that is supposed to take around four hours to complete. After visiting the museum, students listened to a presentation from Lynn Williams, an African-American woman who works as a professional educator for the museum. Her presentation was followed by a sit-down dinner.

Upstart Literary Magazine’s Second Issue Will Be “The Jew Issue”
Published by Aaron Cohen March 2nd, 2007 in Queens College. 1 CommentIt’ll be a “Jewssue,” or Jew-issue, for the second edition of indie start-up magazine 72nd Avenue.
Editor-in-Chief Michael Orbach, a senior at Queens, told CampusJ that Jews make up over thirty-five percent of the student population at Queens College and have been highly-active in everything from the newspaper, to the student government, to running the food court. Partially-funded by the Hillel organization, the Jewssue will examine the rich history of Jewish students at QC and the impact they’ve had.
Orbach said he is not sure what the issue will look like, but some possible features include “The Top Ten Jewish Graduates of QC” (and the ones that didn’t make it), profiles of the future leaders of the Jewish community at QC right now, and non-fiction (”What it’s like to be the only non-Jew on QC”), all with a heavy dose of appropriate cynicism and sarcasm. Orbach hopes to release the Jewssue within the next month.
I am an intended journalism minor at Queens College. Originally from Seattle, WA, I transferred to Queens after studying in Israel at the Jerusalem campus of the Los Angeles based University of Judaism. Currently a sophomore, I write for the Knight News, Queens College’s only student-run newspaper. I hope to facilitate lively discussions about Jewish life on campus by presenting the facts in a fair and balanced manner. I encourage everyone to comment on my articles and together we can keep each other informed.
