IDS Opinion Article Criticizes Rosenfeld’s Essay
Published by Ben Greenberg February 9th, 2007 in Indiana University. 1 CommentYou have to give the article credit for observing what so many others who have covered Rosenfeld’s article hav failed to notice:
Despite the New York Times’ analysis that brought international attention to the article, Rosenfeld does not argue that questioning Israel’s policies is anti-Semitic, per se.
The primary thrust of his thesis hinges on Jews and gentiles who debate the “alleged ‘crime’ or ‘original sin’ of (Israel’s) very establishment.”
However, this quote is at the very least unfair:
The real cause of global anti-Semitism is the holier-than-thou sense of historical victimization that characterizes Zionist Jews, which marginalizes the countless other atrocities committed against countless other ethnic minorities throughout history.
Maybe he meant to say anti-Zionism?
Opinion Article in the Boston Globe Misleading, says AJC
Published by Ben Greenberg February 9th, 2007 in Indiana University. 1 CommentProf. Alvin Rosenfeld’s article for the AJC got a pretty bad rap at the Boston Globe. The AJC had something to say about it:
STANLEY KUTLER’S Feb. 7 op-ed on a recent essay by Professor Alvin Rosenfeld of Indiana University, published by the American Jewish Committee, is replete with unfounded statements and innuendo.
First, the headline is misleading. Neither Rosenfeld in his essay nor AJC has ever remotely asserted that “all critics of Israel” are anti-Semites. That would be absurd.
Rather, Rosenfeld asks a provocative question: Is what is widely called the “new anti-Semitism” — the movement to deny Israel’s right to exist whatever its final borders — assisted, wittingly or otherwise, by those Jews who oppose Israel’s very legitimacy and demonize its every action?
