Walid Shoebat Event Revelations

While significant controversy over rescinded RSVPS to the speech this week has erupted during the past couple of days, some response from the administration and investigation by the BWOG has offered additional perspective.
On another element of the controversy, BWOG thinks its gotten to the bottom of the case of the plastered Muslim Student Association’s office, based on a claimed original of the relevant flyer supposedly appearing with Lee Kaplan’s e-mail address attached.
On the issue of the rescinded RSVPs, BWOG’s got comment from both sides, with the event-sponsor College Republicans calling the university’s decision to allow only 20 of the 115 registered attendees “unprofessional,” and Chaplain Jewelnel Davis saying, “Wednesday at midday University officials communicated to the student groups that it was unreasonable to present a guest list of some 115 non-CUID holders not known by students for an event that was proposed and approved as a Columbia student event.” In an apparent attempt to show equalt treatment among political viewpoints, Davis further noted, “As it has done on previous occasions, including the Norman Finkelstein lecture last year, University officials limited the number of outside guests to a reasonable number — in this case to 20.”
Contradicting Davis’ claim, BWOG asserts:

According to a Bwog source, the adminsitration tried to pull a similar thing last year at the Finkelstein event, but gave in when the speaker threatened to cancel, and ultimately about 180 non-CUID holders were admitted. Practical? Maybe. Incompetent? You be the judge.

Rashid Khalidi Book Signing

The controversial professor spoke at Labyrinth Books (112th & Broadway) yesterday to discuss his new book, The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood. Khalidi holds the Edward Said Chair in Arab Studies, and is head of the Middle East Institute at Columbia.
Last year, Khalidi made headlines when the New York City Department of Education barred him from participating in a professional-development course offered to public-school teachers. The decision followed allegations of anti-Israel bias among professors at MEALAC, and specific accusations leveled at Khalidi in a NY Sun article, which criticized the professor for using the terms “racist” and “apartheid” to describe the Jewish state. Khalidi denied making the comments.
His book was reviewed in this week’s New York Times Book Review

Walid Shoebat To Speak

Former PLO member turned pro-Israel advocate Walid Shoebat will speak at an event organized by Columbia College Republicans entitled “Hate, Terror, Indoctrination, Redemption and Peace.” Shoebat will be joined by former Nazi Youth member Hilmar von Campe and Zak Anani, former leader of an Arab gang. TheSpectator has a report on the event from Amanda Erickson:

The goal of the evening, said College Republicans President Chris Kulawik, CC ‘08, is to hear from people who have chosen to turn away from violence.
“We hope to get a lot of people there,” he said.
But some students said they were upset by the invitation.
“I don’t even feel that his invitation merits a real response,” said Omar Siddiqi, CC ‘09 and president of the Muslim Students Association. “Any intelligent person on campus won’t give heed to anything he has to say.”

Intifada Day @ Columbia

Pro-Palestinian students gathered on Low Plaza yesterday to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the al-Aqsa Intifada. Apparently the commemoration, which, according to BWOG, involved “Palestinian sympathizers. . . wearing kaffiyehs and angrily puffing on cigarettes,” did not go over very well. The Columbia Spectator reported on the event with the headline, “Intifida Gathering Turns into Heated Affair.”

Mixed reports on Columbia dis-inviting Iranian President Ahmadinejad

Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs apparently extended an invitation to Iranian President Ahmadinejad to speak at the school’s World Leaders Forum. According to Columbia Spectator and JTA, the invitation was accepted but the event, which was scheduled for Rosh Hashana eve, was cancelled because the “school couldnt make proper security and logistical arrangements.” But BWOG reports that Public Affairs Director Robert Hornsby denied the event was ever scheduled. The New York Sun reported that the invitation was shrouded in “secrecy and confusion,” with President Bollinger’s statement about the invitation released just before midnight last night. The same article noted that Columbia’s vice president for public affairs, Susan Brown, denied the invitation, calling it a rumor.
LionPAC, Columbia’s pro-Israel student group posted flyers protesting the event across campus.
