Jewish McGill Music Graduate Performing in Montreal

Jason Rosenblatt, a Jewish harmonica player and graduate of McGill’s Jazz Music program, was recently interviewed by The McGill Tribune about his career.
Born in Montreal and now living in Philadelphia, Rosenblatt currently works with Howard Levy, a leading harmonica player and founder member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Rosenblatt credits klezmer music for his improvement on the harmonica. From the article:

Since 1997, Rosenblatt had been attending KlezKanada, a weeklong summer festival of Yiddish culture and the arts just north of Montreal. It was there that he discovered Klezmer, which made yet another serious impact on his musical style.
“The same way I go back and try to learn old blues numbers and old jazz numbers,” he relates, “why couldn’t I pick up some of the old Jewish music as well, learn the repertoire, learn the ornamentation, learn how to solo?”
“Through klezmer music,” he continues, “my capabilities on the harmonica were broadened.”

In 2002, Rosenblatt established the band he currently plays with, Shtreiml, “which plays a blend of klezmer, gypsy music and jazz.”
Rosenblatt is now playing with the Turkish musician Fencioglu, and the two continue to explore “the connections between Eastern European Jewish music and classical Turkish music.” They will both be playing on November 14 at La Sala Rossa, located at 4848 boul. St-Laurent.
