Yeshiva University Republicans president Ari Lamm talked to CampusJ about reactions to YUR’s trip down to Pennsylvania to campaign for Sen. Rick Santorum.
Two weeks ago, a professor from this university walked by our signup station during lunch and, upon seeing our big sign featuring a picture of Rick Santorum, told us that we “will have to answer to HaKadosh Barukh Hu for being Republicans.”
In a discussion later in the day, that same professor refused to debate the issues with me (e.g. abortion, gay marriage, the GWOT, etc.) and instead started calling me names - “unsophisticated” and “ignorant.”
After I demanded that he stop calling me names and stop hurling personal insults at me and instead engage in an actual discussion, the professor responded that there are some things that he felt needed to be said to me that could not be said without being insulting.
Another student, upon seeing our sign, said “[Expletive] Rick Santorum” and, in front of a group of students that had congregated around our table, proceeded to give me the finger.
These are some good examples of the “negative” feedback that we got. However, to be fair, I did get one email from a student in which the student argued - very politely and intelligently - that he did not think our choice of Rick Santorum as a candidate to support was appropriate. I, of course, disagreed with him, and what resulted was a brief but interesting email correspondence that really gave me a feel for what kind of opposition I might need to deal with in the future when arranging events. I appreciate this sort of feedback, and I hope the students keep it coming!
