There is not a single kosher restaurant in Bloomington. On top of that, IU doesn’t offer kosher food. Not even the previously reviewed Falafel’s is kosher. Students wanting to keep kosher have the following choices:
Certified-kosher foods at the market.
Although there’s no kosher aisle like there are in a lot of east coast supermarkets, there’s enough kosher food to live off of at the various Marsh, Kroger, Bloomingfoods, and O’Malia locations. There’ll be some kosher for Passover food available at the supermarkets for when the holiday comes, as well.
Hillel.
From their Website:
Every Tuesday and Wednesday night, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, Hillel sponsors a Kosher Cafe,” as well as a [free] Shabbat Dinner on Friday night. Both Kosher Cafe and Shabbat Dinner meals can be prepaid for the entire year with the purchase of a Discover Hillel Card. All food served at Hillel is strictly kosher. Hillel also offers a Kosher-for-Passover meal plan each Pesach.
There’s a kosher meal plan registration form if you want to join.
The Internet.
This is basically your last resort, though I’ve seen it work quite well. It’s not the option for me, personally.
I’ll be doing some more reporting on those who keep kosher around here, and how they go about it.
